  1. Old Schools.
In olden times there were no national schools: they were forbidden by the English Laws. Any old houses or stables that they got they made their schools out of them. Their schools were in old houses. School was held in the open air. The teacher had one small room and the children were taught in another. Mr. Burns taught in Attymon, Mrs. Fahy taught in Tample, Mr. Griffin taught in Gurteen. the schools belonged to the district. The school in Gurteen belonged to Mr. Griffin, and the others were vacant old dwellings. The parents paid a fee for each child. This was called "school fee".
All subjects were taught as in our own schools. All the old people were able to speak Irish and some could read Irish, but it was not taught in the schools. Children speaking Irish, going or coming from school, were severely punished the next day. The children had books. They had Readers, Grammars, Geographies, spelling-books, Dictionaries, Catechisms, and the New and old Testaments were taught in some schools. The quill pen was supposed to be the best. Some schools had benches for the children to sit on.
