In this district in olden times bread was made from wheat, rye, barley, and oats, which was ground in querns.
The kinds of bread made in the district were Potato-cake, Stampy, and Oaten-meal bread.
Potato-cake consisted of broken potatoes which were first boiled and the skins peeled off. They were then mixed with flour, butter and a little milk to make it into a cake and then baked.
Stampy consisted of raw potatoes which were peeled and grated. The
