  1. In ancient times churning was a common practice, it being carried on in a large scale in Knockmeal and in the adjoining townlands.
    Up to about fifteen years ago, a churn was used in my home, but, when the "barrel" was introduced into the district it went out of use because of the labour of making butter in a churn contrast to the easy method of making it in a barrel: The churn used in my house was about seventy years old, having been used by my grand-father for about fifty years. It was about one foot and a half wide at the bottom and a foot at the top.
