On Christmas night at six o clock...

On Christmas night at six o clock
As the rain and storm blew
Danny the Post knocked at the door
    With letters and parcels new
Though he was wet into the skin
His heart was more light than the mail
He travelled that day through storm and rain
From the town of Abbeyfeale (pronounced "fail")
He gave us a Xmas blessing
As he smiled inside the door
While the water ran down his apparel
And formed a stream on the floor
He was asked to take some refreshment
    He gave a blunt excuse
    To food he also rejected
Not even the thigh of a goose
He sat on the chair contented
    The storm did not cease
He filled his pipe and lit a match
And smoked his pipe of peace
He said to Knockeen I will travel
To make sad hearts grow bright
When I give them registered letters
