- (continued from previous page)7. If a person entered a house where the household were making butter the visitor should give the churn dash three or four strokes as it was considered that the butter yield could be nil or very light if the visitor did not aid in the churning.8. It was customary that a boy or a man should be the first person to enter a neighbour's house on New Year's morning and wish the people a Happy New Year. If the visitor happened to be a man he usually got a glass of whiskey. If a child or a boy he usually got a slice of currant cake + c +c. [Tá an nós ceadhna i gceanntar Daingeann Uí Cúise i gciarraidhe. E o M]9. Another practice was:- On st Martin's (night) Eve - 11th of november - to spill blood of some kind in honour of St. Martin. A fowl of some kind was generally bled. The blood was rolled in tow and put away under the rafters of an outhouse. If a person or an animal got a sudden pain the tow was used to make a X on the seat of the pain and if the animal + c recovered it was given to St Martin. As a rule a slit was made in the ear as a token.
