   7. Another superstition practice is that employed when neighbours try to encrease their butter yield. One person goes to the byres of his neighbours and draws the milk from the cows. The person or persons whose milk is taken are supposed not to be able to make butter and this is remedied by the latter going to the byres of the former and abstracting the milk from the cows. That practice is also resorted to by going into a field and collecting the dew off the grass before Sunrise on May morning. These superstitious practices cause serious trouble in the localities where they are practised.

   5. About three miles from where I lived (in Clare) there was an old woman - "Biddy Early" - who was supposed to be able to reveal things by magic. She had recourse to a bottle containing some liquid which she shook and after looking at the bottle was supposed to be possessed of witchcraft. She took no money but accepted presents of every kind. She was well patronized. If a person complained of loss of milk Biddy could tell who took it.
   6. In Clare it was considered unlucky when setting out on a journey to see two or more magpies on the road before one or to meet a redhaired girl or woman.
