    Match making
A certain man in each district set himself up as a match-maker. He was usually one who knew the people in the surrounding districts. His integrity was rarely questioned.
He first discussed the matter with one of the parties and if they thought the other party suitable the match-maker was sent to the other party with "an account".
A special day usually a fair day or market day was appointed and the parties met in a "public" house in the neighbouring town.
