The great famine of 1846 and 1847 affected the district very much and the old people of the present day tell many stories about it. This district was much more thickly populated then than now and various spots are pointed out as sites of houses whose occupants either died of starvation or emigrated. Before the Famine five or six houses stood on the "inch land" on the left bank of the Feale, now the property of Tom Keane, Lacca East Kilmorna.
