Martin Flynn was undoubtedly the greatest runner in Munster at his time. When training for races he ran by the side of a galloping horseman. Parson Fitzmaurice of Kilcara took a keen interest in him and accompanied him to all sports and meeting. The parson had a greyhound at the time called Othello and he issued challenge to all Munster for a man and dog to beat Othello but the challenge was not accepted. Lord Listowel took Martin to England to compel with a "famous runner" and Martin was the winner there again.
