  1. It is customary with people to get married at Shrove, that is between St. Stephen's day and Ash Wednesday. Long ago there lived in every district a certain man or woman, who used go around to the houses match-making for people. He was usually called a "matchmaker". When a woman got married she got a fortune. The wedding day was a very important day long ago. It was customary to hold a big dinner with all sorts of food and plenty drink. The bride usually wore a very nice suit for her wedding, and all her friends wished her joy.
