- Land in which potatoes are to grow is first made loose, that is the land is ploughed with a plough. Then it is harrowed and next the drills are made. These are made with a plough, my father first makes a scripe straight through the field with the plough, he then makes an other scripe one side of the last one, and then he has a drill made. The farm yard manure is carted from the street to the field and left in a heap at the head land. After three or four days this manure is filled into an ass cart and a fork full is left in the dikes about a yard from each other. It is next scattered along the dikes. Then a guano is shook along ovr the manure. A man gets an empty bucket, fills it with guano, walks on top of the drill, and shakes a little on top of the manure. Then the slits an sgalleoga are spead on the guano. These slits are left about two feet apart. The cutting of the slits are very(continues on next page)
