- There were not many shops out through the country long ago. The people who owned the shops had to bring the goods such as meal, flour, tea, sugar, and salt, from the big towns such as Galway and Tuam, but the bread used be sent from the baker in a covered cart to the shops. Long ago some poor people used to sell apples and fish at the Chapel gate on Sundays. In those times money was very scarce and often a poor man would have to pay his debts by work. It was said it was unlucky to begin work on a Saturday.
