Old Customs.
1. It was the custom to put a lighted coal in the butter so it would not be taken by the fairies.
2. After a cow would have calved the people would put a string on her tail for fear she would be stolen.
3. They would not (any) give any milk away on May-day for fear they would give away the butter.
