When the lamp-oil was first used it was the little ink-bottel that was in use.

When lamp-oil was first used it was the little ink-bottle that was in use. A tin lid like the lid of a man's clay pipe was put on top and this held down the wick made of courdroy and coming up through a hole bored in the lid. There was no globe and when it burned the hous was at once full of smoke. It was awful.
