  1. (continued from previous page)
    I thought of long ago
I saw the streets o'oergrown with grass
    Their homes made desolate
And sadly oer my spirits passed
    The thoughts of ninety eight
I stood upon the sacred ground
    Where Irish heroes sleep
Who gave their lives their homes to save
Their souls to God to keep
They gave their lives for to regain
    Their rights usurpers took
They would have freedom or a grave
    At leave of Ballinamuck.
I saw the flags of green and gold
    Unfurl to display
The feelings of both young and old
    Assembled there that day
From far and near to celebrate
    Their brands and banners took
In memory of the ninety eight
    Who died at Ballinamuck.
