Making of Rush Candles.
Rushes of a good strong type were gathered from dry drains or marshy places. These were cut into the required lengths, tied in small bundles and left to season over the fire.
When dry the rushes were pealed leaving a tiny strip of the rush's green coat to support the candle. They were then rolled in rendered fat in a grisset and left to stiffen. They were then ready for use.
