  1. I wish I were a blue cuckoo
I know where I would sing
At Ellis's lodge in yon green grove
In the blooming months of Spring
When sol would peep o'er heath-clad hills
Through the green leaves I'd scan
To catch a glimpse of the lass I love
    She is lovely Mary Anne
On the brow of a hill in Slievenakill
    This fair on does reside
She loves the land that gave her brick
    For which brave Emmet died.
Her virgin face and graceful mien
    Oft through my visions ran
She's my sunshine in this drowsy life
    She's lovely Mary Anne
In a shady nook by a babbling brook
My love does sit and sing
No flower so fair as she is there
    Where myriads of them spring
Her music sweet would charm complete
The heart of any young man
    As she tickles the keys
