  1. In the year 1880 one eviction scenes, which will never be forgotten took place in Slievenakilla. The mountainous district has very poor land and the total failure of the potato-crop and a poor price for cattle and sheep left the tenants penniless. When the agent called for the rent there was no money to pay. Proceedings were immediately taken for possession of their homes and lands. The young men of the parish and some from the adjoining parishes came to the conclusion that on the day of the evictions they would man the houses and hold possession against the forces of the Crown. For that purpose they made all preparations. They put ten or twelve men
