  1. Melt the resin in a "grisset" ( a vessel made of metal and narrown at both ends). There was a handle attached to the "grisset". Get some "tow". Make a wick of it. Draw it through the resin which adheres very quickly. The candles are then left to harden.

  2. Peel rushes. Leave one strip on. Dip them in melted fat. Rush candles used to emit a very clear light - much clearer that the resin- candles. Three rush-candles would last about 3 hours.
