- The old people used to think that the butter was taken by witches. If a witch saw a man going into a house and lighting his pipe without taking a “dreas” she could take the butter. If a man came into a house and lit his pipe he should pull three straws from the door and no one could take the butter then. If people were churning they would not let a coal out of the fire nor let a person drink in the house. If a person was giving away butter milk she should put a small grain of salt in it, or holy water, and no one could take the butter.
