- Pull long rushes in a field or in a ditch. Tie them in sheaves and bring them in and beatle them. Leave then out on the ditch or bushes to dry.
When they are dry and seasoned bring them in and make a rush rope.
It is useful for tying cattle and is called "scioth". - Ropes used were made of rushes or straw. The rushes were pulled and beaten with a stick then plaited or twisted to make a rope. This rope was called "scioth".
Cattle were ties in the byre with scoith. Ropes were also made from straw twisted in the same way. - Collector
