If one took clay out of the "bátach" -- said to be a trench dividing Ireland in two halves -- a beast would die on them. It is also unlucky to build on the "bátach". The fairies would toss any building built on it. A story is told of a man who built a room on the "bátach." If they would gather any milk in it for churning no butter would come off it. Another man built a room on it and a voice said to him that before long he or one belonging to him would not live there. And now that house is vacant and those who lived in it are in America.
