    One evening as I wandered by the setting of the sun.

    One evening as I wandered by the setting sun
    A lazy looking cavalcade I espied with crowds of oxen dun.
    And neighing nags and fleecy sheep a slow and tired crowd.
    From Mayo down to Derry port was driven by O'Dowd
    A courier from the crowd rushed forth and with speed came spurring on
    To seek a nights sojourn with Sir Fredrick Hamilton.
    He gave them gracious welcome and piled the banquet higher
    and freely flowed the ruby wine till his weary guest retired

    O'Dowd he's roused from slumber sweet in terror and dismay
    To see the headsman's are in hand beside him where he lay.
    And behind him Sir Fredrick's men are standing in a band
    But foremost stood the traitor there, the Lord of Hamilton
