- About the beginning of February there were 24 strange colours noticed in the sky one evening. Some one person happened to be out of the house on some business and he saw these colours and drew other people's attention to it. People believed that it meant something.
The next day it was announced in the paper. It was called the Aurora Borealis. It was said that crowds of people watched it in the streets of Dublin and Sligo.
People had not long to wait until they knew what it meant. Thee came a terrible storm which lasted nine or ten days. Farmers were beginning to get afraid that their ricks of haystacks of corn would be tossed and scattered through the fields. In some parts of the country we could see the farmer and his sos out making ropes to tie down the hay.
In the year eighteen thirty nine there was a big wind. It is known as the year of the big wind. Ricks of hay were scattered about. Trees were rooted up out of the ground and roofs were blown off houses. Until quite recently there were people living who remember the night of the big wind or at least(continues on next page)
