  1. Houses built long ago were a lot different from houses built now.
    Inside the roof was covered with bags, and the outside was thatched with rushes.
    The old people slept in the hitches on a bed called a settle bed.
    There were also beds with curtains round them.
    There were half-doors in the houses to keep the children in, and to keep the hens out.
    Turf was burned in all the fires.
