  1. During the Cromwellian War, Galway was the last town to be captured. Coote came into the town and stabled his horses in St Nicholas Church. He forced the nuns to wait on himself and his men and next morning he wanted to put them to death but they fled. He followed them but on coming to the River Corrib they flew across miraculously and landed on an island at the far side. This island was then called Nuns's Island.
    There is a convent there at present belonging to the Poor Clare Nuns.
