- Once upon a time three men went away searching for work. As they were passing a King's palace they saw on the palace gate a notice, "Three men wanted" and they went in and told the King that they were three strong brave men. "Very well" said the King there is a castle over there beyond and nobody could live in it because it is haunted. Tonight if ye are strong and brave men ye will go over to it and there are three stairs in it and at twelve o'clock ye will get a candle each one of ye and sit on each stair." They did as the King told them and just at twelve o'clock when they were settled on the stairs they heard noise coming down the chimney and each of them had a gun. They were settled now and they heard an awful whirlwind passing. In the morning they went and told the King what they had seen and the next night they went again to the palace. But they did not sit in the same place as before. One of them sat outside on the house beside the chimney and the other one inside the room. Now it was twelve o'clock and the man outside on the house saw three coffins coming and he told the men inside to be(continues on next page)
