  1. There once lived near Clifden a man named Tom King. He owned a few houses in the district. After a few years a terrible sickness came over him and he had to leave the country for the good of his health. He left the care of his houses to Patrick Canavan his son-in-law. Patrick Canavan soon made good friends with his neighbours and every evening he would go down to a friend named Joe Mc Grath. Every night they played cards and told stories together.
    One dark night as he was going down the lane he saw a big black dog with eyes of fire coming up the lane. Patrick was a good man and afraid of nothing. He came near the dog and it lay down. Patrick
