    also said if a red-haired woman came into the house where the churning was going on the cream would never be churned while she was there. Old people used put a red coal of fire under the churn while churning this was supposed to bring a plentiful supply of butter. A man would not be allowed to kindle his pipe while churning was going on.
    When churning is being done spring water is added frequently to make the cream thin or in hot weather to cool it. A person knows when the cream is churned as it turns into small grains first then the dash is turned backwards and forwards and the grains become butter. then it is taken out with a wosden saucer and rinsed several times adding some salt
