    In the year of 1880 to Connaught I came in, I left my native Donegal a fortune to win.

    In the year of 1880 to Connaught I came in
    I left my native Donegal, a fortune for to win.
    But instead of winning fortune myself I brought to ruin,
    For day and night, my thoughts are set on the maid of River View.
    When I came here a stranger, my heart was light and gay
    I did my work with a right good will, as I got a generous pay.
    I was faithful to my master and his work right well I'd do.
    Then when my toil was over I'd set out for River View.
    When first i saw this maiden fair 'twas on a summer night
