- It is a custom of the Irish people to kill something in honour of St Martin. Some people kill a fowl and sprinkle its blood in the four corners of the house. This blood is supposed to keep away all harm for twelve months.
Then those who can afford it kill a sheep but anyting in this life will do providing you kill it in honour of St Martin. There is a story of St. Martin's goodness.
Once and Irish man was put into prison for some small reason. It happened to be coming on to St Martin's night. Now this poor man felt very lonely in his prison cell especially when he thought of St Martin. So he asked the Warder of the would(continues on next page)- Collector
