- Long ago the men wore high "caroline" hats. They also wore knee-breeches. Those would just come to the man's knees. They wore a "cut-away" coat with two tails. The coat hung to the knees also. They wore cloth leggings with brass buttons, and a black neck-tie, and very stiff shirts. The old people say "as stiff as Paddy's father when he was nine days dead." The old people also say the shirt could be put standing on the floor it was so stiff with starch.
