This district was thickly populated but those having sufficient land did nto entirely depend on the growing of the potato, a good many had oats and rye from which they ground oatmeal at the local corn mill in Templetogher.
Tom Farrell, John's father was one of those and he and his sons made a dugant in their garden in which they hid their supply as raids for food by hungry persons was a common occurrance in the locality at the time.
John who was a boy of 20 years of age at the time was one of a number of carmen who used to transport flour, meal and other commodities from the port of Galway to Roscommon, Longford, Carrick-on-Shannon etc. He often related an incident which occurred while on one of those(continues on next page)- Collector
