  1. Long ago baskets used to be made in this district from rods. A certain kind of rods called odgers were used in them. When the rods were fully grown they were cut and put into boiling water in order to make the skin come off easily. The basket was then shaped with stronger rods and the light ones are used in weaving cleaves for bringing home turf on asses' backs and sciobs which are light, flat vessels for bringing turf to the fire are made in like manner.
