The girl's mother died at the birth of her daughter and the king immediately married another woman. The step-mother was jealous of the love which the king bore for her daughter and resolved to put an end to it. So one night when the girl was asleep she smeared her face with the juice of blackberries so that she girl was not known by anyone in the palace and was turned forth to seek her living.
