    about five foot high. In those days there were no mowing machines. The farmers mowed their oats and meadows with scythe's. This man was the best (man) mower in County Galway. He could mow an acre of hay and oats with his scythe in a day. His wages were very low. He only got Two Shillings a day.
    There was a man living near Kilkerrin at this time. He was also a good mower. One day there was a fair in Kilkerrin. The two men met there. They were drunk. The mower from Kilkerrin said that he was a better mower than the Clonberne man. The Clonberne man was vexed. They began to fight. The Guards made peace between them. They settled to mow a day's work each and who-ever would mow the most would be the best mower. After this they both went into a field of oats. They began to mow. The man from Clonberne was the best mower.
    The other man was jealous of him. He began to beat the Clonberne man. They had a fight
