    During a great war, two horses were used in drawing a battery of artillery. These two horses were companions. During the war one of the horses was killed by a shell. Afterwards the surviving horse was tied up in the usual way. His food was brought to him but he refused to eat.
    Other horses were brought round him to cheer him, but it was no good. The horse died shortly afterwards and was buried by the soldiers near his old friend.
