    It is said that these weeds were growing at the foot of the cross in Calvary and that the blood from the wounds of Our Lord fell on them causing this red stain to remain on them ever since.
    Heather was used for dyeing purposes. It gave wool a brown colour if the material was soaked in oil.
    Other names for the Cráiste are Praiseach or wild mustard. The latter name was given to it because its seeds when ground were used as mustard.
