    Old people tell stories of Cromwell once visiting Loughrea He was in Loughrea the time of the Earl of Clanricarde and it is said it was from Loughrea he carried out most of his plans.
    Cromwell always wanted to find the secret plans of the Irish. There was a shoemaker named Mulkearn who lived in Main-Street during Cromwell's visit in Loughrea and all the chieftains in Loughrea had this cobbler's shop for a meeting place and many plans were discussed
