  1. In Loughrea and the district round people say it was the best place in the penal times, as priest's had not to flee from from the district as much as they had in other districts.
    Many stories are told of the penal times. At the back of the Barrack there is a stone higher than lake water opposite the island. There is the shape of a knife and fork on this rock. It is now called the Lord's table. Mass is supposed to have been said on this rock in the penal times.
