  1. A very flourishing Tobacco Industry was carried on in Portumna about 80 years ago (1938-80)
    Men in the district have a clear recollection of this industry. The owner of the factory was a man named Cunningham, The manufactured plant was sent to surrounding towns in Galway and Tipperary.
    The Factory site is still to be seen.
    Smuggling in order to evade tax was cause of decay. The Smuggling place is still to be seen adjoining the Clanricharde Demesne.
