  1. In the Penal Times
    It is told that a man called Thomas Connolly was about to get married. He was buying land from a woman, when the Landlord Pollock got to hear of it. Pollock went at once to the woman and offered her a few pounds more than Connolly had offered, and the woman accepted. When Connolly heard what Pollock had done, he went to him and told him his case, and offered to give the amount of money he had given to the woman. Pollock got very angry and said "Begone or I'll have you arrested".
    There is a story also that a poor carpenter got a month in jail for cutting a branch.
