  1. Bread
Oaten meal bread was the principal bread made in the olden times. Oaten bread was used all year round except that they used to keep some wheat for Christmas and used to sell the rest of it to England. Some old people remember the querns or grindstones being used in this district,
Boxty bread was made:- large potatoes, peeled, grated and squeezed through a muslin cloth, then mixed with a little salt and flour and afterwards baked.
Potatoe cake was made:- Some peeled potatoes mashed and mixed with a little salt and flour. Milk or water was not used in kneading boxty bread or potato cake. The bread was baked according as it was used.
It was nearly all griddle bread that was made. Marks were put on a cake to keep the edges from breaking. Indian meal bread was also used locally.
