  1. There was an old man who lived in Derrybrine long ago. His name was Connaire. One day a voice spoke to him and told him to go to a certain place in the village and under a large flag, he would get a crock of gold. But on no account to go until the people were gone into eleven o'clock mass. He had not the patience to wait, and he went a few minutes before the time. He put his hand under the flag to take out the gold. The ear was bitten off him, and he had to return home without the gold, and at the loss of his ear.
