    In olden times it was a custom that people used get married from the twelvth day to Ash Wednesday and this period is called shrove. There are certain times of the year that marriages seldom or never take place. Nobody gets married during Lent and Advent for it is said that this is an unlucky season.
    The month of May is also said to be unlucky. It is an old saying, a bride in May will soon decay. The custom of getting married long ago was the man on the look out of a wife would send a friend to the girl's home. In them days they usually took a bottle of whiskey to the girl's parents.
    The first thing he would do is to leave the bottle of whiskey on the table and sit down by the fire and smoke for a little while. Next he would deliver his message to the girl's father, then they would both go into the parlour and the whiskey
