  1. In the district where I live there are ruins of an old school. It was situated in the east side of Kilgevrin and some of its walls are to be seen in it yet. Mark Roche was the name of the teacher that was teaching in it. There used to be about thirty scholars going to it every day.
    They had no desks to write or to sit on. They used to sit on the floor and write on a slate. The teacher had no stick to slap the scholars but he used to slap them with a catanine-tail and no catechism was taught to them. It was all Irish they were learning and that is why most of the old people are Irish now. The teacher used to stay a night with each scholar. After
