- Signs of the Weather
If the cat sits with his back to the fire it is a sign of bad weather. It is also a sign of bad weather if the horse stands with his back to the wall or if the cat scrapes on a cold day, or if the smoke from the chimney does not float straight upwards.
When seagulls come inland it is a fore-runner of bad stormy weather.
When the hawthorn blooms early the year will be bad. Swallows fly low when damp or rainy weather is near. The curfew comes near the house, and there is a mist over the rivers, the sky is bright, the sunsets are red.
A falling star is a sign of frosty weather. When frogs and worms enter houses it is a sign of wet weather. When the frog is a bright yellow colour it foretells fine weather but when his colour becomes dark it means wet weather.
Robins come near the house in cold hard weather. The moon on its "back" or surrounded by a halo foreshadows what weather. When wet weather is approaching horseflies, ants and mosquitoes(continues on next page)
