  1. There was an old school in Joseph Hogan's land in Southpark, Ardrahan, Co. Galway. The name of the teacher that taught in it was Peter Carr. The seats they had in the school was long fourms and the pay the teacher got was that each of the children had to bring him a penny every week. They had copies for school-work and wrote on them with pens made from quills and had slates for doing sums on them at home. There was only two classes in the school which were first and second. The teacher had no home but the children used bring him every second night to their homes. After a few years the people built a little hut for him and they gave him a little garden and the children brought him some potatoes and he sowed them in it and in that way he had food.
