    On St. Patrick's Day it is customary for all to wear a sprig of shamrock in the hat or coat, and a harp or green ribbon in honour of St. Patrick. The old custom of "drowning the shamrock," or drinking "Patrick's pot," so it was called, is not now much followed.
    Shrove was the time for marriages to take place and formerly marriages used be celebrated only during Shrovetide which began the day after Epiphany and finished on Shrove Tuesday. "Runaway" marriages used take place on the latter night. Shrove night is called "Pancake night" because it is usual to have a feast of pancakes.
