  1. Once upon a time there lived a poor man named "Seán." He lived in the country with his wife and five children. He worked very hard but always seemed to meet with misfortune. All his stock died and in the end he had nothing left but two cows, but after a time they, too, died.
    The poor man, now broken-hearted, decided to sell the hide of his dead cows in order to buy some bread for his wife and children. At break of day, he started off on his journey, and as he had no more of conveyance, it was evening before he reached the tanner's house. He knocked at the door but no answer came. He raised the latch and walked in, but just as he went in he saw
